We listed five of the sustainability terms we use frequently.
1. Carbon neutrality
Carbon neutrality means that the amount of carbon emissions sequestered from the atmosphere is equal to the amount produced. This is achieved either by reducing emissions or by compensation. For example, all 20 Finavia airports are carbon neutral.
2. Net zero
Net zero emissions means that the carbon emissions caused by operations are equal to the emissions sequestered by carbon sinks. Finavia's goal is to reduce the amount of carbon emissions at all its airports to as close to zero as possible by 2025.
3. CDO landing
CDO (Continuous Descent Operations) landing is a method of descent for approaching aircraft in which less fuel is consumed and thus less emissions are generated from landing. Finavia has been involved in the development of the CDO landing method, and we also encourage airlines to use it.
4. Compensation
Compensation is often also referred to as carbon offset or climate compensation. What this means is that when carbon emissions are produced, an equal amount of carbon emissions is sequestered elsewhere. Finavia has compensated for its emissions for example by participating in various wind and solar energy projects.
5. Guarantee of energy origin
A guarantee of origin for electricity or heat means that the energy has been produced with renewable energy. Examples of renewable energy sources are wind energy, solar energy, aerothermal energy and hydropower. All Finavia airports use wind and solar energy, and our newest parking facility at Helsinki Airport uses waste heat from the terminal for heating.
