At the airport, everyone is aiming for the same goal: for smooth and safe travel. If there are disruptions in data communications at Helsinki Airport, the phone will soon be ringing in the IT unit for Huy Tan, Service Manager for general cabling.

Finavia's IT unit employs approximately 60 experts. They take care of data communications, IT infrastructure and security solutions, among other things. The unit is divided into several teams that are responsible for specialised areas such as data networks, system support, software development and cybersecurity.

“The cooperation between the different teams is seamless, and a good work community is one of the strengths of our unit,” says Finavia's Huy Tan, who has been working for three years as Service Manager in the data communications team.

Huy Tan has extensive experience in the industry and enjoys his work. “The core of my work is to provide customers with cables and copper, meaning the physical elements of data communication. I particularly like the fact that the workdays are varied. There's a nice number of new challenges every day,” he says with a smile.

Data communications affect the passenger experience

At airports, data communications are as fundamental as electricity. They need to work in an uninterrupted way to keep services running smoothly for passengers and businesses at the airport. Tan describes his work in the background as an invisible but critical factor for the passenger experience.

“When everything works, few people think about us. But as soon as something doesn't work, people get in touch with us quickly. The cause may also be somewhere other than in data communications. For example, if automatic check-in doesn't work, it might not be related to us. However, solving problems and working together are in our blood. In addition, our unit has extensive expertise, so the situation is usually resolved quickly,” he says.

Finavia is an attractive workplace for IT experts

In Tan's opinion, Finavia is a unique environment for IT experts.

“An airport is like a city with extensive infrastructure. The data communication networks cover the entire airport and its service buildings, airport lighting and many important support services. Here, one's own competence is strengthened every day, and one inevitably learns new things all the time. The airport is also an international operating environment, which spices up everyday work nicely.”
Finavia offers IT experts many opportunities on their career path. There is a multitude of tasks and projects. Huy Tan says that employees are also encouraged to apply for interesting positions or participate in projects.

“In addition, you can highlight your own interests or development needs in performance appraisals.”

As a Service Manager, he sees his work as a vantage point in the industry.

"Air traffic is strictly regulated, so caution is used in the adoption of new technologies. In this respect, we cannot be pioneers in the IT sector in the same way as companies operating in the free market. However, we keep a close eye on how we can utilise the latest systems at the right time, for example, to ensure operational reliability and safety."
