How’s this to celebrate 100 years of Finnish independence? Five buses in special liveries – inspired by uniquely Finnish themes from heavy metal to Formula 1 – await passengers making their way from the terminal arrival or departure gate to the aircraft.

This year, the centenary of Finland’s independence, five apron buses at Helsinki Airport have been customized as part of the festivities and they feature uniquely Finnish themes. In addition, videos on these themes are shown during the commute.

“We want to introduce all our passengers to our country, whether they stayed here for a week or only 30 minutes,” says Katja Siberg, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Finavia.

Transfer buses in five special liveries await airport guests. There’s one that honors the Finnish national composer Jean Sibelius. Another is dedicated to a fundamental part of Finnish identity: the summer cottage, or kesämökki.

Finns are fascinated by and very good at motorsports, and the Formula 1 bus represents that cultural aspect. In addition, a vehicle with an Olympics motif pays tribute to the country’s hero athletes.

And last, if you’re a metalhead, chances are you know that heavy metal music is huge in Finland. (Even former US President Obama acknowledged Finland’s metal culture in his speech welcoming Nordic leaders to the White House in 2016.) So why not a metal-themed apron bus?

So far, the response to these Finland 100-themed buses has been quite positive.
“We have seen some delightful comments on social media,” shares Anna Tuomi, Marketing Manager at Finavia. “The buses have been spotted by famous Finnish bands, too: 69 Eyes shared a photo of the heavy metal-themed bus and Amorphis the summer cottage one.”

You have the rest of the year to hop onto one of these rides.
